WASHINGTON, DC, November 15, 2023 – Human Coalition joined fellow pro-life groups in asking the Supreme Court to require the FDA to uphold basic safety protocols for the abortion pill regimen, in a friend-of-the-court brief filed on Wednesday. In the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Human Coalition supports national medical organizations and doctors in their legal challenge to the FDA’s expedited and illegal approval of the drug mifepristone for chemical abortions.Human Coalition’s brief underscores the stories of its women who suffered at the hands of abortion providers who failed to ensure their safety in distributing the abortion pill. Women say they were not warned about the serious risks and potential life-threatening complications of the pill regimen and the trauma they experienced afterward.Chelsey Youman, National Director of Public Policy for Human Coalition, on Wednesday stated:“We are committed to advocating for the millions of victims of abortion pills – the children whose lives were violently snuffed out, and the women who were misled about the physical pain, severe bleeding, and trauma they would suffer from taking abortion pills. Our brief recounts real women who were ill-prepared for life-threatening complications and the trauma of seeing the body of their deceased child from an at-home abortion.“The FDA understood these risks when it placed the abortion pill on its REMS protocol – reserved for high-risk drugs – because of serious adverse experiences for women. Then they rolled back basic safety protocols because they prioritized politics over the well-being of women and girls. Women deserve better than the lies that abortion is health care.“At Human Coalition, we see the walking wounded and we minister to these women who have been scarred by the abortion industry. We will continue to walk alongside every vulnerable woman who feels abortion is her only option, and are committed to a continuum of care for each woman and child so life can exist for the more than five million precious children that have been killed by mifepristone since it was recklessly and illegally approved 23 years ago.”The Fifth Circuit in August required the FDA to reinstate some safety regulations the agency previously rolled back, including: that pills be prescribed and dispensed in-person in a health clinic setting, limited to use by seven weeks gestation, and that there be mandatory reporting of non-fatal adverse effects of the pills.Human Coalition’s brief argues that women are the ones paying the costs from the FDA’s decisions to illegally approve mifepristone for abortions in 2000, and toss aside the safety regulations of mifepristone beginning in 2016. The brief includes stories of women who suffered near-death experiences from abortion pills because of neglect by abortion providers. It also includes the stories of women who regret their abortions.About Human CoalitionHuman Coalition is one of the largest pro-life, pro-woman, and pro-family organizations in the country, committed to making abortion unthinkable and unnecessary.  Founded in 2009, Human Coalition has grown from a simple internet outreach idea into a comprehensive care network that reaches women facing unexpected pregnancies, rescues innocent preborn children from abortion, and restores families to stability.
