January 19, 2023, WASHINGTON, DC — On Thursday, Human Coalition celebrated the U.S. House passing The Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act. This legislation blocks the Biden administration’s attempt to shut out pregnancy centers from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program.
Chelsey Youman, National Director of Public Policy with Human Coalition, issued the following statement in favor of the bill:
“Our leaders must decide what kind of society we want to be for pregnant women in need. The U.S. House has chosen care and compassion while the Biden administration chose abandonment and neglect. The Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act protects as much as $40,000,000 of aid going to women and families when they need it most—vital assistance to minority communities that the Biden administration seeks to eliminate. Human Coalition’s Pregnancy centers provide life-affirming care and support to nearly 40,000 families each year, and nationally pregnancy centers are serving nearly 975,000 families, offering medical, financial, and material needs.”
“In our work at Human Coalition, 76% of women seeking an abortion say they would prefer to parent if their circumstances were different. They want support, not abortion. We can think of nothing more worthy than supporting countless women and families through healthy pregnancies and assisting them to a place of stability. When women leave our centers, they leave transformed because our staff has accompanied them through their challenges not only with tangible assistance, but also with counseling and support that helps meet their emotional, medical, social, and economic needs.”
“We are grateful to Rep. Michelle Fischbach (R-Minn.) for caring for pregnant women in need, and we call on the Senate to pass it as quickly as possible.”
The Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act would restore the flexibility offered to states by the original law that created the TANF program. It also recognizes the critical role that pregnancy centers play in meeting some or all of the stated goals of the TANF program: Providing aid to needy families, promoting job preparation and marriage, preventing out-of-wedlock births, and encouraging two-parent families.
